The Geriatric Psychiatry Community Services of Ottawa (GPCSO) is a bilingual community based mental health program funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that was implemented in 1977. We help maintain seniors in their home with counselling, managing difficult situations, and other strategies to decrease and/or avoid unnecessary hospitalization. It provides interdisciplinary outreach consultation, assessment and treatment for the elderly and their caregivers who live in the Ottawa community. Our team includes: geriatric physicians, registered nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, capacity assessors, and a psycho-geriatric resource consultant. Direct services include an intake and screening process, a comprehensive client centered assessment, diagnosis, treatment plan, case management which may include pharmacotherapy, counselling, family education and support, behaviour management, client advocacy, and capacity assessments. Indirect services include education to professionals, families and caregivers, developing links with other services, program development, systems planning, student placement, and participation in projects.
